SPARTA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 12-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car while retrieving a ball that had rolled onto a western New York road.
Livingston County Sheriff Tom Dougherty tells local media that the boy was playing in a yard around 4 p.m. Thursday when his ball rolled onto Route 63 in the rural town of Sparta, 40 miles south of Rochester.
Dougherty says the boy went into the road to get the ball and was hit by a car. He says the driver didn’t have time to stop before hitting the boy.
The child’s name is expected to be released Friday.
He was a newly arrived student in the Dansville Central School District, where officials say he had only been attending classes for about 10 days.
