HOUSTON, Miss. (AP) - A judge in Chickasaw County has granted bond to a woman who was arrested for allegedly leaving her newborn child in a shed in the Houston community.
WTVA-TV reported (https://bit.ly/1nbTfW8 ) that 25-year-old Cora Lynn Watkins was freed on $12,000 bond and faces a preliminary hearing on May 15.
She is charged with felony child abuse and abandonment of a child under the age of six.
Investigators say Watkins left work in March and delivered the baby at an unknown location, then left the child in a shed at her mother’s home.
The child was found by children who heard it crying. The baby is now in state custody.
In Mississippi newborn children can be legally dropped off at local police departments, fire departments or hospitals. It is illegal to abandon any child of any age and conviction for child abandonment is a felony.
It was not immediately clear whether Watkins has an attorney.
