New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg, a Democrat, announced Thursday that he will not seek re-election to a sixth term next year.
“While I may not be seeking re-election, there is plenty of work to do before the end of this term and I’m going to keep fighting as hard as ever for the people of New Jersey in the U.S. Senate,” Mr. Lautenberg told the New Jersey Star-Ledger.
He said he will instead will begin a two-year mission focusing on gun violence, protecting children from toxic chemicals and creating “more opportunities for working families in New Jersey,” the Star-Ledger reports.
Mr. Lautenberg is expected to make a formal announcement at an event Friday.
