ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) – The new owner of Alexandria’s Old Town Theater says the historic space is being renovated to restore its 1914 appearance and become a Vaudeville showplace.
WAMU-FM reports the former movie house was slated to become a retail outlet earlier this year. Now new owner Rob Kauffman is working with a theater operator to host daily Vaudeville performances, including short acts people can see while eating lunch.
Mr. Kauffman said he’s hoping to have a live event every night of the week, including improvisational comedy, lectures and theater productions.
Mr. Kauffman had been leaning against using the building as a theater, saying there are few examples of successful theater operations. But some Alexandria residents were outraged over plans to make it a retail space.
The theater is set to reopen by November.
