Full service on Metro’s Green Line was restored in time for the Monday morning commute after a train derailment on Friday.
Crews worked over the weekend to repair the 1,000-foot section of damaged track. Service north of Fort Totten had been suspended since Friday afternoon, when the train derailed. Trains were able to begin single-tracking through the area shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, spokesman Philip Stewart said.
The three-car derailment occurred near West Hyattsville station. All 55 passengers were safely evacuated, Mr. Stewart said.
The probable cause is a buckle in the track created by heat, but the investigation is ongoing, Mr. Stewart said.
A 35 mph speed restriction on all above-ground Metro tracks because of last week’s heat wave was also lifted at the start of the business day.
