LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jean Dujardin has won the best-actor honor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for the silent film “The Artist,” bringing the Hollywood newcomer a step closer to claiming an Academy Award.
Dujardin won Sunday for his role as a silent-era superstar whose career collapses as talking pictures take over in the late 1920s.
The big-screen awards for supporting actor went to Christopher Plummer as an elderly dad who comes out as gay in “Beginners” and Octavia Spencer as a brassy maid in the Deep South drama “The Help.”
The winners at the SAG ceremony typically go on to earn Oscars, whose ceremony is Feb. 26.
