Montgomery County police said Tuesday they have arrested a civilian evidence technician employed by the department in connection with the theft of cash seized by officers.
Suk “Brian” Ryong Yun, 39, of Rockville was arrested Monday after a routine inspection and audit of the department’s cash seizures revealed missing money.
The audit, conducted in September, showed what police described as “several discrepancies” between computerized inventory records and actual monetary seizures.
Police said Mr. Yun was responsible for and had access to both the computerized inventory and the seized money and that their investigation determined that Mr. Yun had been manipulating the computer inventory records in order to hide the stolen money.
Mr. Yun was charged with one count of theft: $10,000 to under $100,000 and one count of theft scheme: $10,000 to under $100,000.
Police said the investigation was continuing in an effort to determine if any additional property was stolen.
Mr. Yun was placed on administrative leave and reassigned within the police department, where he has worked since August 2010, when he transferred from the Montgomery County Department of Recreation.
He was initially held on a $15,000 bond, but police said Mr. Yun posted bond and was released from jail.
