WASHINGTON (AP) - Mike Lonergan, who has led Vermont to four postseason appearances in six years, is in the final stages of talks to become the new men’s basketball coach at George Washington, a university official with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Friday.
The official said that Lonergan was visiting the GW campus and that the hire was expected to made soon. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the athletic department had yet to make an announcement.
Lonergan, 45, has been the coach at Vermont since 2005. He has a 126-68 record with the Catamounts and led them to the NCAA tournament in 2010. The school also played in the NIT in 2007 and 2011, and the CBI in 2009. This year’s team finished 23-9.
The GW job would return Lonergan to the nation’s capital, where he won the NCAA’s Division III national title in 2001 with his alma mater, Catholic. He left Catholic in 2004 and spent one season as an assistant under Gary Williams at Maryland before moving to Vermont, where he succeeded Tom Brennan.
Lonergan would replace Karl Hobbs, who was fired last month after 10 seasons with the Colonials.
