Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III signed an executive order Wednesday adding a $1 surcharge to regular taxi fares because of high fuel costs.

County code authorizes the executive to declare a fuel-cost emergency when the average retail price of regular gasoline exceeds $3 per gallon.

The surcharge will take effect immediately and remain in effect through June 30, 2012. It will not be charged to any person who is 60 years of age and over or for any fare pursuant to any county contract.
