Taxis in the District will begin charging an additional $1 a ride on Monday to offset high gas prices.
The increase was authorized in an executive order signed Saturday by D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray, a Democrat, following recommendations from the D.C. Taxicab Commission.
The surcharge, which will not be applied to trips into Maryland or Virginia, extends through July 25. However, the commission can repeal the charge before it expires.
