Rep. Anthony D. Weiner, New York Democrat, is following in the footsteps of politicians who have gone before him.

Inappropriate behavior and conduct with women have been their downfall, and Mr. Weiner is emulating their example. Now admitting he sent lewd photos to women online through Twitter, Facebook and other social websites, he has retracted his initial lies when he stated his email had been “hacked.”

With a name like Weiner, common sense would dictate that this politician above all others would have to be even more cautious and exercise an even higher level of good judgment regarding his behavior. His utilization of personal, anatomical photos that showed bulging underpants and included personal messages stating he was surrounded by “pussy cats” exemplifies the epitome of conduct unbecoming of a politician who has been elected to public office.

Mr. Weiner’s response when confronted was a fabrication likened to the response of a juvenile who is caught with his fingers in the cookie jar.

Now, of course, he is sorry. He tearfully regrets his actions, acknowledges it was all a terrible mistake and says he is sorry for the pain he caused his wife, family and constituents. But Mr. Weiner knew what he was doing and was obviously deriving personal pleasure from his online escapades. He likely assumed he would get away with it and his online trysts with women far and near would never come to light.

Now, like former New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer and others like him, it is time for Mr. Weiner to say goodbye.
