WASHINGTON | With a fast-moving winter storm canceling thousands of flights across the U.S., travelers in the Washington area were affected even though only rain fell overnight in the region.

At Reagan National Airport, departure screens showed about 30 canceled flights Wednesday morning to places such as Chicago and New York.

Judith Whitt of Takoma Park, Md., is trying to get to Maine for a funeral. She was scheduled for a 10 a.m. flight, but learned while checking in that it had just been canceled. Her airline offered Whitt a flight through Philadelphia, but she opted for a direct flight at 3 p.m. to avoid further delays.

Ebony Robinson was worried about getting to Dallas for a Super Bowl party. The Steelers fan spent 90 minutes on hold with USAir to cancel her first ticket from New York to Washington, opting to take a bus rather than risk a canceled flight on the first leg of her journey. She says her whole trip, “is just a long story.”
