LEWISBURG, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia’s get-out-the-vote campaign has paid off: Lewisburg has won Budget Travel magazine’s online contest to become America’s Coolest Small Town. Lewisburg held rallies encouraging people to vote, and supporters touted the town on Facebook, too. When the 2½ months of voting ended Friday afternoon, Lewisburg had 139,118. That put it nearly 12,000 votes ahead of Astoria, Ore., which finished with 127,837. Both towns were more than 100,000 votes ahead of the next-closest competitor, Clayton, N.Y. The website indicates a total of 437,480 votes were cast. The winning towns will be featured in the September issue. In 2008, the magazine named Fayetteville one of America’s five coolest small towns.
