CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - E-mails released by the University of North Carolina indicate coach Butch Davis sought counseling for the players involved in the NCAA investigation into his football program.

In an e-mail sent in September to athletic director Dick Baddour and Chancellor Holden Thorp, Davis said there had been “a great deal of pent-up anger frustration and animosity in these players.” He said he was worried the situation “has the potential of manifesting itself in a way that could be destructive to our players.”

The Associated Press and other media outlets recently obtained a copy of the e-mail through a public records request.

Team spokesman Kevin Best said players received additional counseling following the e-mail.
