CHICAGO — An emotional Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says it was a great honor to know fallen firefighter Corey Ankum.
Daley remembered Ankum at his funeral service Thursday as someone who loved the fire department and talked about it constantly.
Ankum was one of two Chicago firefighters killed last week when a roof collapsed after a fire.
His wife, Demeka Ankum, has been an assistant to Daley for years. Daley says for Corey Ankum being a firefighter wasn’t a job, it was a way of life.
Firefighters from all over the continent filled two chapels at Chicago’s Apostolic Church of God and crowded an overflow room.
Ankum’s funeral will be followed by burial at Lincoln Cemetery in Blue Island.
Firefighter Edward Stringer also died in the roof collapse. Stringer’s funeral was Tuesday.
