OPINION:
The recently signed Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 provides breakfast, lunch and dinner for children as they attend their schools. That being the case, should we expect the dollars spent on food stamps that go toward the feeding of families to drop correspondingly?
Why should the government fund both programs when schoolchildren’s needs are being met under the new law? Could it be that we will be paying twice to meet the same need? At least there could be a symbolic gesture to acknowledge that the government should not be double-charging us for the cost of food for children. The more fundamental question of why I should have to pay for the food of other people’s children obviously has not occurred to those advocating this program.
