Finding a new home in Arlington, Va., sometimes feels like uncovering buried treasure because so few new homes have been built there in recent years.

The home at 1432 Dinwiddie St. may not be brand-new — it was built in 2005 — but every surface in it gleams as if it hasn’t been touched for the past five years. On the market for $999,000, this stone-and-brick-front Colonial-style home offers a perfect location and plenty of space.

Set in Arlington County’s Barcroft Forest, directly across the street from Wakefield High School, this single-family home is convenient for families with children in school and for commuting to downtown Washington, Tysons Corner, Alexandria or Rosslyn. Plenty of parks are nearby, along with libraries, shops, restaurants and entertainment. The home is close to Routes 50 and 7 and Interstate 395 for commuters.

Built by Calvert Homes, this Carlyle model has been upgraded and meticulously maintained, so new residents will feel as if they are moving into an elegant modern home. The home has three finished levels with floor-to-ceiling windows on all sides to fill the rooms with natural light on sunny days. The main level includes polished hardwood floors and hardwood stairs, along with extensive upgraded trim around the doors and windows, crown and chair-rail molding, wainscoting and recessed lighting.

A covered portico with columns provides a stately entrance to the home. Inside, guests can be welcomed in the foyer, which is partially open to the upper level. The main level’s open floor plan allows a glimpse into multiple rooms from the foyer, which has a chandelier, 10-foot ceiling and a double-door coat closet.

To the left of the foyer is the main-level library or home office, which has a double-door entrance with a transom, hardwood flooring, crown molding and four tall windows on two sides of the room.

Nearby are the formal areas of the home, including a living room with a triple window at one end, columns, hardwood flooring and crown molding. The living room opens to the expansive dining room, a 21-by-12-foot space with crown and chair-rail molding, wainscoting, a double floor-to-ceiling window and French doors. Future owners might choose to add a deck off the dining room.

Adjacent to the dining room is a powder room with a pedestal sink and hardwood flooring. A butler’s pantry with a granite counter, cherry cabinets and hardwood flooring links the dining room with the kitchen.

The informal side of this home has an open floor plan, with the center-island kitchen at the back of the house opening to a central breakfast area with French doors. At the front of the home is the family room.

The kitchen includes a double window over the sink, a walk-in pantry and extensive granite counter space. The cherry cabinets include a section with detailed molding across the top. The cherry center island includes storage space as well as open shelving. The island has a granite counter and an extra preparation sink. The kitchen includes upgraded appliances and recessed lighting.

The breakfast area has hardwood flooring and a large built-in cherry desk with plenty of drawers, a cabinet and shelving above, and a granite counter. The breakfast area opens into the family room, a generously sized room of more than 21 feet by 13 feet. This room has floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, hardwood flooring and a gas fireplace with a slate hearth and a custom-designed mantel and surround.

Upstairs, the central hall overlooks the foyer. Double doors lead from the hall into the master-bedroom suite, which occupies nearly half of the upper level. The bedroom has a ceiling fan, upgraded carpet and five floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides of the room. A second set of double doors leads into the walk-in closet, which has built-in organizers. A door links the closet with the laundry room, which also is accessible from the hall.

A third set of double doors leads to the luxurious master bath, a brilliant white room with ceramic tile flooring, two vanities, a soaking tub set under a window and an oversized glass-enclosed shower.

The second and third bedrooms, each with a double-door closet, share a connecting bath with ceramic tile flooring. The front bedroom has two tall windows, while the third bedroom has an oversized picture window.

The fourth bedroom has an oversized walk-in closet, a double window and a private full bath.

The finished lower level has upgraded carpeting and a large recreation room with two windows and an adjacent storage-utility room. This level also has a bedroom, which can function as a home office, at the front of the house with two tall windows and a walk-in closet. Adjacent to the bedroom are a full bath with a shower with a glass door, a cost closet, a storage closet and a door to the three-car tandem garage.

In addition to the extensive space of this home, the owners added to the home’s comfort with zoned heating and air conditioning and a quick-recovery gas water heater.
