THE MARKET: Corning is betting it will be the glass of choice for televisions that dispense with protective rims or bezels for a more elegant look.
THE HISTORY: It has been biding its time in a hilltop research lab for almost a half-century looking for a widespread commercial use. The material was invented in 1962 and grew out of efforts that started in the late 1950s to find a glass as strong as steel.
