D.C. elections officials have rejected a request to bring legislation granting legal recognition to same-sex marriages in the nation’s capital before voters.
The board in its ruling released Monday afternoon said placing the bill passed by the D.C. Council last month on the ballot would violate the District’s Human Rights Act, which bars discrimination based on sexual orientation. A referendum cannot violate the act under city law.
Referendum backers, led largely by a coalition of area ministers, can challenge the board’s decision in D.C. Superior Court.
