Buying a boat might not be in the cards while we’re knee-deep in a recession.

How about renting one?

In the District, Thompson Boat Center in Georgetown provides single kayak and canoe rentals for $8 an hour; doubles are $10 an hour or $30 a day.

Its central location provides easy viewing of sites along the Potomac River, including the Watergate, the Kennedy Center, Roosevelt Island and Washington Harbor.

Small sailboats and rowing shells also are available for rental. (Rentals of rowing shells require certification, which can be obtained by attending rowing classes at the boat center.)

The center is open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Rentals are on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information, call 202/333-9543 or visit www.thompsonboatcenter.com.
