TWT FIVE ” WAYS THE STEPHEN STRASBURG SAGA COULD PLAY OUT
1. The Nationals sign Strasburg for a modest $8 million, and he immediately begins pitching for the Harrisburg Senators — He makes the major league team out of spring training in 2010 and goes 27-2 with a 1.38 ERA, winning the Cy Young Award. A statue of his likeness is placed behind center field, replacing that of Walter Johnson.
2. Agent Scott Boras succeeds in securing a $50 million contract for Strasburg — In his first start in Harrisburg, Strasburg blows out his arm. A year later, he is traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for bag of balls. By 2012, he is working at a car wash in the San Diego area.
3. The Nationals fail to meet Boras’ demands and don’t sign Strasburg — The team goes on to lose 123 games and have 20 consecutive losing seasons before Major League Baseball takes over the franchise and moves it to Montreal.
4. Strasburg declines a record contract offer and eventually signs with the New York Yankees — The Nationals use the money they saved to sign all of their other draft picks and several free agents who become part of a great core lineup in 2011. Jordan Zimmermann returns from Tommy John surgery to outpitch Strasburg in Game 7 of the 2011 World Series.
5. The Nationals sign Strasburg for $11 million — He goes on to pitch for the team for seven years, racking up a record of 70-72 with an ERA of 4.81. The team will finish with an average of 81 wins during the stretch. The Nationals change their name to “Mediocres.”
