RUN OFFENSE A

Clinton Portis continued the strong running that has made him the NFL rushing leader. Portis had his fourth straight 100-yard game and one touchdown en route to 175 yards. With Ladell Betts out with a sprained knee, Rock Cartwright played ahead of the newly signed Shaun Alexander as Portis’ primary backup.

PASS OFFENSE C

Jason Campbell was 4-for-5, albeit for just 17 yards, when he tweaked his groin on an incompletion to Fred Davis. The quarterback was checked extensively by Washington’s medical staff and was able to keep playing. Campbell finished with 164 yards and a touchdown.

RUN DEFENSE B-

The Redskins swarmed Jamal Lewis during the first half, holding the burly ex-Ravens running back to 38 yards on 11 carries. Linebacker London Fletcher and safety Chris Horton were particularly active against the run. Lewis got in gear in the third quarter, helping set up Phil Dawson’s 37-yard field goal. He finished with 80 yards on 19 carries.

PASS DEFENSE A

Usual No. 1 cornerback Shawn Springs was out with a calf injury, but Carlos Rogers held Browns standout receiver Braylon Edwards to four catches for 58 yards. Safety Chris Horton contained Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow. The pass rush put plenty of pressure on Derek Anderson, sacking him once.

SPECIAL TEAMS C-

New punter Ryan Plackemeier averaged just 37.3 yards gross but did put two inside the 20. Kicker Shaun Suisham missed a 36-yard field goal at the end of the first half. Moss’ first punt return since 2005 went for 8 yards. Washington’s kick coverage was fine.

COACHING C

The Redskins didn’t come out inspired after last week’s last-second upset loss to St. Louis. Some of that has to be Jim Zorn’s fault. The playcalling wasn’t exactly inspired either. In contrast, coordinator Greg Blache’s defense did an excellent job of smothering the Browns.
