This May 30, 2000, photo provided by Sandia National Laboratories shows their Z machine located in Albuquerque, N.M. The Z-machine is part of the Pulsed Power Program, which started at Sandia National Laboratories back in the 1960s. Pulsed power is a technology that concentrates electrical energy and turns it into short pulses of enormous power, which are then used to generate X-rays and gamma rays. Federal officials announced on Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, that National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, a subsidiary of Honeywell International, has won the $2.6 billion contract to manage the Laboratory.
