Sakamoto died at his Honolulu home Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017, after heart failure and a long battle with chronic kidney disease, his son Kyle Sakamoto said. He was 82 years old. Honolulu-born Sakamoto was named chief of bureau in 1994, overseeing AP operations in Hawaii and the Central Pacific.
