Vice President Cheney on Monday praised Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for a “superb” convention speech, and said she would be fully ready to serve as vice president if elected along with Republican nominee John Mccain.
“We’ve had all kinds of vice presidents over the years. Everybody brings a different set of experiences to the office and also a different kind of understanding with whoever the president is,” Mr. Cheney said to reporters in Rome.
“There’s no reason why Sarah Palin can’t be a successful vice president in a McCain administration,” said Mr. Cheney, who is on the back end of a trip to Georgia and other Caucasus nations, where he has rebuked Russia for its invasion of Georgia last month.
Mr. Cheney, who is considered by many to be the most powerful and active vice president in American history, said that a Palin vice presidency “won’t look exactly like the Bush administration or the first Bush administration, (or) the Ford administration.”
“It’ll be relatively unique to this president and this time that they’re in office,” he said.
Mrs. Palin’s speech on Wednesday last week in St. Paul aired while Mr. Cheney was Baku, Azerbaijan. The man called Darth Vader by his detractors said he got a kick out of watching Mrs. Palin.
“I thought her appearance at the convention was superb. [I] watched that with great interest. I loved some of her lines. What was the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? It’s lipstick,” he said, laughing.
“I think she’s a good candidate and I don’t see any reason why she can’t be an effective vice president.”
