North Korea’s recent announcement that they will restart their nuclear weapons program is causing consternation at the White House and will be one of the top discussion items at the United Nations this week.
President Bush, who departs for New York shortly, called Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday to discuss the regime in Pyongyang, the White House announced this morning.
“President Bush expressed his concern to President Hu about the latest North Korean announcement that they plan to restore the nuclear facilities at Yongbyon to their original state,” said National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe.
“The two presidents agreed that they would work hard to convince the North to continue down the path established in the Six Party Talks toward denuclearization,” Mr. Johndroe said.
The economy also came up in the conversation, unsurprisingly.
“President Bush and President Hu discussed the current state of international financial markets and President Bush briefed President Hu on steps his administration plans to take, in conjunction with the U.S. Congress, to stabilize international markets,” Mr. Johndroe said.
