Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Americans are “recoiling” from President Bush, which is helping Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama in his quest for the White House.
“What you have right now is a country recoiling from George W. Bush into Obama,” Mr. Gingrich said in an interview with the Washington Times.
Mr. Gingrich, who was interviewed for part three of our series on “Big Government,” defended the viability of small government conservatism.
He also predicted that if Mr. Obama is elected and given a Democratic majority or super-majority in Congress, there could be a repeat of the 1994 Republican revolution.
“The challenge Obama will face if he wins is does he really go with [Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid and [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi into a left wing government, in which case they’re likely to recreate the conditions of 1994, which led to the first Republican majority in 40 years? Or is he going to create a centrist majority?” Mr. Gingrich said.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the president’s younger brother, also chimes in on the future of limited government conservatism. Pick up the Washington Times tomorrow for the full piece.
Part one (read it here) showed that under President Bush the size of government has increased more than any president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and part two (read it here) shows how the contracting system used for much of the spending on defense and homeland security has been plagued by dysfunctional oversight.
