New York City officials are investigating how a wealthy inmate was able to host a lavish bar mitzvah behind bars for his son at the downtown detention center’s gym, the New York Post is reporting.
Tuvia Stern, a financial-scam artist, held the party for his son, and a caterer provided kosher food, china, forks — and knives — for about 60 guests.

Just think how upset city officials would have been if the bar mitzvah had been a bris.
I really would have liked to see the party invitation. It could have used a Monopoly theme: “Go directly to jail … and celebrate my son’s bar mitzvah!”
City officials are a bit embarrassed about the party — because it didn’t receive any coverage in the society pages of the New York Times.
The prison gym has good lighting, great acoustics, a nice area for dancing and its own security personnel. Sounds nice. Hmmm. Do you have to be an inmate to book it or can anybody make reservations?
