Sen. Ted Cruz opened up about his footwear Tuesday, saying that he took the “cowards way out” by ditching in the name of comfort his favorite pair of black ostrich-skin boots in favor of black tennis shoes before launching a filibuster against Obamcare.
The admission came about three hours into his filibuster of Obamacare funding and during a brief exchange with Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican who had told Mr. Cruz that he walked away from his 13-hour filibuster earlier this year over U.S. drone use wishing he had worn more comfortable shoes.

Mr. Cruz revealed that he had a difficult choice to make before he entered the chamber because his boots had served as a good luck charm during his days in the courtroom and that he has always worn them on Capitol Hill.
“I had a choice with which I was confronted,” the Texas Republican said. “Do I follow through with my argument boots or do I listen to the very sage council of my friend from Kentucky and go with more comfortable shoes.”
“I will embarrassingly admit that I took the coward’s way out,” he continued. “So I went and purchased some black tennis shoes, in fact I think they are same model as the senior senator from Utah, Orrin Hatch, wears on a regular basis. So I am not in my argument boots and I confess that I really do feel embarrassed by that.”
