House Speaker John A. Boehner endorsed Mitt Romney’s presidential bid on Tuesday, saying he was ready to throw his support behind the former Massachusetts governor now that it is clear Mr. Romney will be the party’s nominee.
“I think Mitt Romney has a set of economic policies that can put Americans back to work and, frankly, contrast sharply with the failed economic policies of President Obama,” Mr. Boehner, Ohio Republican, told reporters after a closed-door meeting of the House Republican caucus. “And I will be proud to support Mitt Romney and do everything I can to help him win.”
Following in the footsteps of Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California, Mr. Boehner said he withheld his support up until this point in the campaign because he serves as chairman of the Republican National Convention, where the party’s nominee officially will be tapped.
“I wanted to make sure all candidates had a fair process and a fair opportunity,” Mr. Boehner said.
