This is a new thing for me this season: Actually watching a handful of games from around the country.
Undeniably, the chance to do so is the best part of covering a night game.
SEE RELATED:Unfortunately, much of the early action hasn’t been all that great.
A look around at some of the early games…
* Normalcy has returned to the universe as Georgia Tech blanked Duke 27-0. Amusing stat of the day: Demaryius Thomas caught all nine of the Yellow Jackets’ receptions and rolled up 230 yards and a score. I smell an ACC offensive back of the week honor in his future barring a truly insane performance by someone else.
* Ah, nothing like the Big Ten to ensure fast, low-scoring games. Penn State won’t score 35-50 points every week, but the Nittany Lions were never seriously challenged at Purdue. Next up: A trip to Camp Randall and a crack at Bucky Badger.
* Yes, that’s Minnesota at 5-1 now after handling Indiana. It doesn’t have to be pretty (and it wasn’t), but anything’s better than last year’s misery.
* That’s five in a row for Sparty, who looks like it could very much play the part of being this year’s version of Virginia (that is, a team that rolls up a good early record without being especially great).
* Oklahoma and Virginia Tech are both handling inferior opponents with relative ease. Kansas is not.
* Best early-afternoon game is easily the O’Brien Bowl, which warrants my attention for the final five minutes as the Wolfpack close in on tying things.
