Had a lot in today’s dead-tree edition about Darrius Heyward-Bey, and I’ll hopefully have the chance to post long parts of our conversation a little bit later this morning.
But he had a truly revealing comment about teammate Danny Oquendo that warrants its own entry.
SEE RELATED:From purely a football perspective —- just what happens between the lines —- there might not be a more enjoyable part of covering Maryland over the last couple years than watching Danny Oquendo convert on a third or fourth down.
Oquendo caught 13 passes on third down this season. All yielded enough yardage for a first down. His precision is impressive, and his savvy in those situations probably wasn’t used enough over the last few years. A case could easily be made he’ll be one of the two or three biggest losses this season, though the presence of Ronnie Tyler should offset that a bit.
Anyway, back to Heyward-Bey’s take on the matter.
“I tell people Chris [Turner] doesn’t look my way on third down,” Heyward-Bey said. “He’s looking for Danny. You saw that in the Boston College game. I’ve been telling people all year. I even told a DB one time in the game ‘He ain’t coming my way.’ Danny’s the man.”
OK, that’s a morsel for now. I’ll try to check back in once I get through security at the airport.
