A two-mile auxiliary lane on westbound Interstate 66 was to open by 7 p.m. on Monday, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced, providing Northern Virginia with the first of three planned spot improvement along the perpetually congested corridor.
“All motorists heading west out of Arlington will find a slightly smoother commute, and hopefully gain a little more time off the road,” Mr. McDonnell said. “Through improvements like this one we are continuing to make progress in getting traffic moving again in the Commonwealth.”

Rep. Frank R. Wolf, who worked with former Rep. Thomas M. Davis III to get initial funding for the project, also hailed its opening.
“This is the first step in a three-part process to keep traffic moving on I-66,” Mr. Wolf said. “We need to continue to be innovative in how we approach dealing with congestion in the region and this is a prime example.”
