I had to check the math last night when 50 Democratic senators signed the letter urging disgraced Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to step aside.



Then I remembered.

Oh yeah - Vice President-elect Joe Biden is still a senator from Delaware and doesn’t plan to resign his seat until next month.



And it turns out the Delaware Democrat could be a deciding vote on the auto bailout bill coming to the floor.



It passed the House, but will be a close call in the Senate, where Republicans hold 49 seats and aren’t thrilled with the bill.



The breakdown is 48 Democrats, 2 independents who caucus with Democrats and one vacancy. (That was POTUS-elect Barack Obama’s much talked about of late seat.)



Biden is in D.C. today, meeting with Secretary-of-State-designate Hillary Rodham Clinton, who, by the way, also is still a senator and expected to vote.



A transition source said today that Biden is “in consultation” with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

 

“If his vote is needed, he’ll be there,” the source said.
